Data Centre Guidance

Six weeks ago, I stepped into a new chapter of my career — one that I hadn’t originally planned, but now can’t imagine not being part of. Transitioning into the world of data centre recruitment with GemPool has been both exciting and eye-opening. Coming from a Life Science recruitment background, I was curious, slightly nervous, but mostly eager to dive in and make sense of this high-demand, technical space. Here's a look at my journey so far — the learning curve, the wins, and why I’m genuinely excited about what lies ahead.

Week 1: Hitting the Ground Running

getting started in your job

The first week was a whirlwind, full of onboarding sessions, team intros, and my initial crash course into the world of data centres. I quickly learned that data centres are the beating heart of the internet, and the roles within them, from technicians to engineers, are both mission-critical and rapidly evolving.

The team at GemPool was incredibly supportive. No question felt too basic, and that made a world of difference. Each team member helped me navigate the tools, platforms, and industry lingo, making the transition smooth and encouraging.

Week 2-3: Learning the Language of Tech

These weeks were about digging deeper — understanding job descriptions, speaking to candidates, and learning to translate technical jargon into meaningful career opportunities. I had conversations with electrical engineers, data centre technicians, and network engineers — all passionate people who reminded me that recruitment is really about people, no matter how technical the role.

This was also when I started supporting live roles, handling applications and shortlisting candidates. Each call I made helped build my confidence and strengthened my understanding of what hiring managers really value.

Week 4-5: Real Impact & Real People

By this point, I wasn’t just observing — I was actively contributing. I supported the recruitment process for a contract technician role, worked on a high-volume project, and even received positive feedback from a hiring manager. That feeling of helping connect the right candidate to the right role? Unmatched.

I also began building stronger relationships with my candidates — learning about their certifications, career goals, and relocation needs. These conversations reminded me that the tech behind data centres is impressive, but the people behind the tech are even more so.

Week 6: Reflecting & Growing

growing in your job

Now that I’ve wrapped up my sixth week, I’m reflecting on how much I’ve learned — and how much more there is to learn. From sourcing strategies to understanding visa requirements and onsite expectations, it’s been a journey of growth.

Working at GemPool has shown me the value of specialist recruitment, the power of a great team, and how exciting the data centre industry really is. I’m just getting started, and I can’t wait to see where this path takes me next.

Final Thoughts

If you’re considering a career pivot, whether into tech recruitment or something completely new, go for it. Ask questions, stay curious, and surround yourself with people who are willing to share their knowledge. That’s been the key to my journey so far.

Here's to many more weeks of learning, growing, and connecting — one placement at a time.
